Understanding Fluid Behavior — Measuring Absolute Viscosity

RheoSense’s VROC® technology integrates the core principles of rheometry with microfluidics and MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) manufacturing to create a compact viscometer capable of precise measurements using micro-scale samples. This innovative platform surpasses the limitations of conventional viscometers in sample volume, measurement range, and precision.

Scientific Principle

The core measuring element is a rectangular slit flow channel made of borosilicate glass with a constant cross-sectional area. As the sample flows through at a steady rate, embedded pressure sensors detect the pressure drop from inlet to outlet. This pressure drop corresponds to the shear stress at the channel walls. Combined with known geometry and flow rate, the system calculates shear rate and shear stress, enabling accurate viscosity measurement.
